How does a relay work?
As it is mentioned, the relay closes or opens a circuit based on an electromagnet. The electromagnet attracts an armature when it is supplied with current. The relay has two contacts, one that is normally closed (when no current passes through the electromagnet) and the other that is open.
What is a relay for?
To understand where relays are used, it is good to know what the biggest advantage is. These can control high drain circuits with a weak electrical signal (a pulse).
This is why the relays are used to activate high-consumption circuits such as the energy necessary to operate an engine, lights, car horn, windshield wipers, and window lifters. When the weak signal is given that the relay should be actuated, it closes the circuit and they start working.
Parts of a relay
It is already mentioned most of the parts of a relay, but let’s get them clean. In the image (above) you will be able to see all the parts that make up a relay and is explained below.
Electromagnetic magnet (coil, terminals and core), which is the one who receives the electrical signal that the circuit must be closed.
Armature, which when the electromagnetic magnet is turned on sticks to the core.
Contacts, one of which is normally closed (NC) and the other normally open (NO). When the armature moves, it makes the contract C move, which opens NC and closes NO, closing the desired circuit.
How to test a relay?
To know if a relay works, it must be verified that when the current is delivered to close the circuit, current begins to circulate in it. For this you can use a continuity tester ( tester or multimeter ). It is a device that turns on a light or emits a sound in case of current flowing.
